HW for 10/22

Read some articles about Juan Williams' firing from NPR. Watch some videos of Williams on Fox News with Bill O'Reilly. Given what you know about NPR, Fox News, and what we've studied about journalism and ethics, what do you think about this controversy. Comment below in at least 10 sentences.

  1. I think this contraversy can go both ways, I understand why Williams could feel this way,but on the other hand its a steriotype. Since 9/11, people have been a little scarce when it comes to muslims, or arabs, and thats understandable because recently those are the people who are causing negative activities or situations. However, Williams is wrong in giving a bias opinion because of the profession he is in, but i dont think he should have got fired. A suspension definitly, but no loose his job! In the end i do think Williams will apologize for the comment he made and be rewarded back his job, but if not; i wont be suprised

  2. As a journalist, your job is to be obejective and to present the news without giving your opinion, but let the people make the decision. This is why I disagree with Kevin. I understand his points because after 9/11 many people are frighten and when people see an arab or a muslim they assume they're terriosts. If you a public figure, you can't be seen making these mistakes. NPR is a librel broadcast uncompare to Fox, which is conservative. That's why it doesn't shock me that William has a $2 million contract with Fox. I think that Fox is a perfect fit for William since Fox is bias and make sure people feel adn think the same way as Fox. Overall, this controversy shows us how media is an imporant factor of our life and if you become a journalist, you have to be careful about what you say.

  3. I think that he should not have been fired. My opinion is based on my personal ignorance into the industry. I do not know exactly what it was that he was epected to say, or why he was there, from his company's perspective. Both of those factors would contribute to my opinion of what he should/should not get fired for. On an ethical level, I think he should be permitted to say what he wants as an individual so long as he does not bias his works. From a realistic perspective, the masses will think what they will- NPR hired him and has the right to fire him if they choose to. I honestly don't understand what the contravercy is...

  4. I thought the article was good and it got to the point. I would have to agree with Joselyn aboutafter 9/11 many people are frighten and when people see an arab or a muslim they assume they're terriosts. I think that is true. People think just because someone who looks different from them or dress different are terriosts. I do not think that people should make there judgement so fast. I think it would be good to get to know the person. It is like the saying "Never judge a book by it cover". I would also have to agree with Penguin-Guru about how he should not have been fired. If and when you are thinking of becoming a journalist you have to work on what you say....so many thing can be misheard or misread.

  5. perhaps, in insulting an entire culture, he was trying to impress Mr. OReilly with his ability as a reporter to do so. we know from the fact that he wasn't told to shut up that OReilly was ok with him saying it, even that he agreed. my guess is that he just wasn't thinking about anything. i don't see why he would be fired for making a stupid mistake. OReilly says stupid things all the time, and he doesn't get penalized for it. maybe it's contagious. it's not his fault he got sick.

  6. I think that Bill O'Reilly is a jerk. He interrupts and cuts off a lot of people, he says shut up a lot, and he's just plain controlling. In my own opinion he should be fired and banned from every news channel or radio station, he just plain rude. The way O'Reilly talked to Jeremy Glick was defiantly not professional, or polite. In the I kinda wonder why Fox would ever want to hired this guy. Here's a video I looked at where Bill O'Reilly gets really pissed about the most stupidest thing ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tJjNVVwRCY

  7. What I thought about the firing of Juan Williams from NPR was that the decision they made was a good one. His comments from my opinion were very harsh and demeaning. NPR did not agree with the statement that Williams made about how he is scared of seeing Muslims dressed in their traditional clothing while in he is in airports. Nor does NPR agree with the controversial show, The O’Reilly Factor, where he made the statement. Although I agree with Juan Williams being fired, I think that Williams should not be completely criticized because he didn’t say that all Muslims were extremists and terrorists. However, by him stating that he was afraid of seeing Muslims in their traditional garb in public places, like airports, he confirms other people’s fears of Muslims, as well. All the while, Muslims aren’t causing any more trouble than any other group of people. I simply think that Juan Williams should have chosen his words more wisely and also should have been more mindful of the shows he appears on making certain statements. Based on reading other articles, it appears that people have different opinions about Williams being fired.

  8. Personally, I believe that what NPR did to Williams is unfair. In my opinion, Juan Williams basically said what most people feel. He was getting his point across as well as the majority of people. I know lots of people, whom after september 11th, are scared of planes; especially if a Arab is on the plane. The other night i was talking to my friend and he said that he gets really nervous if he sees a Arab looking man on the same plane as he is on. I feel bad for saying this but, I also get kind of nervous while on a plane with a Arab looking man. I then think about something my mother has always told me: "Don't judge a book by its cover." I should not apply the stereotypes that i have against all Muslims and Arabs. I have a lot of friends who are Muslim and they do not make me nervous, so why should i feel nervous about a random man on the same plane as i am?

NPR has this view that these type of things should not be said when in reality, a lot of people have the same feeling as Juan Williams.
