Read the following article, and comment below (at least 10 sentences). How would you answer the question posed in the headline, given what you've read and seen (in the documentary we watched together)?
I think that all this new technology is sort of a double edged sword. It helps people, but also, hurts them. for example there are people that use technology to harm others like the story of Tyler Clementi. Then there are people who just use it in a safe self entertaining way. The thing with how technology is advancing is that it is showing and teaching us new things, but it is also making us loose information too. like online news. I predict that if someday online news will surpass the printed-on-paper news.
i agree with hannah when she said the new techology can go both ways, as a positive or negative. Technology is very helpful, easy, and can be fun to use, but when people use it in a negative way, those are the ones that give the new and advance technology a bad image. I also think that it is very sad and pathetic that the two students from Rutgers would even spend so much time in making that kid embarresed, and miserable of his life to the point where he felt he had to commit suicide. I bet those two students feel ashamed and horrible for the way things ended up, and probally wish they could take what they caused. This new technology can be very scary because now you have no privacy, people can see or hear you at your most private moments. Its just all very confusing, we need this type of technology in our lives because it is very useful and helpful, but on the other hand it can also harm us in many ways.
I thought that the article was good and sad. I would have to agree with Hannah. When I was reading the article I thought that new technology are good for somethings, but bad for others. I think that when people bully others, it only makes things worse. People can get hurt by what other people say. I think that before you make fun of someone, you should think about what might happen to them, what they might be thinking and what they might do. When I was reading the article it was making me think why make fun of someone who is like us? Whats the point?
Its scary to see how a good invention is used to humiliate or torture other people. I agree with everybody else that technology has its pro and cons. Clementi committed sucide because he was bullied and probably blackmailed by these people. These students that were bulliying Clementi from Rutgers are idoits. Why would you waste your time bothering somebody else life? Don't you see you wasting money in college? Do something more productive with your time. Bullying is becoming a big issue ezpecially among those who are homosexual. Media is great to have and very useful, but at the sametime it's scary because you could find inapproiate things about other people in the internet and media. I feel terrible that Clementi committed suicide. I really feel like there needs to be a punishment for this kind of behavior.
i suppose in cases like these i tend to become very Freudian. ahem: the desire to embarrass someone else publicly is present at all times, in all people, some people hide it better than others, and some people just ignore it. technology merely provides an opportunity for people to do horrible things to each other, and often they do, not knowing what the consequences will be, or even sometimes knowing quite well what will happen. Omgpinkcutie, sometimes people do exactly what you want them to, and because the thirst for violence is so great, they do it anyway. just to be a jerk.
I agree more so with AG than the other posters. Tools, such as "new technology" and the assumed "old technology", are inherently neutral. I have no idea how anybody can think of a tool, an entirely non-cognitive entity, and think of it as a good or bad thing. Digressing to more conventional perspectives, though, it is my opinion that all new technology is good. It is people who are to be blamed with the repercussions of positive or negative resulting uses. The issue is one of human nature, though I see this as somewhat off topic for many of Freud's perspectives. Would the world be better off without the use of nuclear weapons? Maybe. Would the world be better off without nuclear energy? I think not. Regardless of the technology, though, it is unfortunate that the event in the article took place.
I thought this story was kind of disheartening. How can someone want to embarrass someone like this; to the point where they actually commit suicide? Media definitely has a part in this. Young adults and older teenagers are using these methods that they have seen on the television or heard about to hurt other people because they think it is funny. For example, in the movie American Pie, one of the main characters does a dance while he strips and it goes all over the internet and before you know it, all of his friends and classmates know about it. The movie makes it seem funny but i think this definitely contributes to young adults thinking that it is funny to play this kind of prank on others. Most of the time it has a stronger impact on the person than they think it does. For example, this young adult committed suicide because of the video that was put on the internet. Hopefully, this article will help encourage people not to do these kind of pranks.
yet another really sad story but i have a good sang for this one. "The best of business is to mind YOUR business and to mind YOUR business is the best of business." I really do think about this sang a lot before i go and say or do something to someone. It does help and that way everybody is happy and things like this dont happen. But again i rather not hear about people killing themselves and killing other people because its just not right. if its not you don't worry about it keep to yourself. everybody is different. You never know how its going to affect someone in the in the long run and it can also come back and hit you in the face.Thats how i see it. another thing is, is that this another reason why kinds of technology shouldn't be used, but thats just me
Learning about the tragic death of this Rutgers student is very sad. However it is not that surprising because people are always trying to find new ways to bring people down. I agree with Hannah because the internet can help people and hurt them all at the same time. This article makes me think like what type of evil things are going on inside of the persons head who is bullying him. It is also a matter of how some young people are focusing only on humiliating and invading other peoples’ privacy. Instead of just focusing on themselves and trying to improve their own lives. Thus creating more turmoil for the victim. This shows the negative sides of how technology and human nature seem to collide into one another .Since we have all of this media around us now we should be focusing on using it wisely by improving peoples lives and not to disadvantage them. I don’t think that all students use technology solely to humiliate people but it certainly has become more of a problem. The only way to fix this problem is to not go medaling into other peoples personal lives. I think that you should always think twice about what they are doing and ask themselves how would I fell if this happened to me. They should be sitting in a class listing to a long lecture on this. If he wanted other people to know about this he would tell them . I think that those people are mostly to blame for this. If it weren’t for those people he might still be alive today. Therefore I do think that the digital age has made some students callous.
